PLAY BETTER #16: SUSTAINABLE PLAY WITH PLANTOYS
The Better Toy Store loves the Earth, and that means promoting play that is safe not just for our children, but for our environment too.
To be truly eco-friendly, the entire life-cycle of a toy (from ‘cradle to the grave’) should be looked at from the standpoint of its total impact on the environment; and this includes where it was manufactured, how it was manufactured, its longevity and durability, and its ability to be reused and recycled.
This is why we do everything we can to ensure that the products we put on our shelves are not just safe and fun for our children, but also functional and long-lasting. Good quality toys that are designed with a strong purpose are often durable, possess better play value, and can be passed down from one child to the next, significantly minimizing wastage in the long run.
This month, we keep our eyes on Sustainable playmakers PlanToys, who has gone far and beyond to maintain imagination, play value, and superior quality standards – all while steadfastly following a path of environmental and social responsibility. By constantly pushing boundaries in its innovation processes, the much-loved toy company admirably passes on the spirit of Sustainable Play through its ideas, culture, design process, and various methods of Reducing, Reusing & Recycling – resulting in meticulously designed toys that are not just interactive, fun, and flexible; but also responsive to the developmental needs and circumstances of our children and the environment.
PlanToys implements best practices that far exceeds the toy industry standards and takes the art of toy making to the next level. It is famously known as the first company in the world to manufacture wooden toys from preservative-free rubber wood; sourced from rubber trees that no longer produce latex. In 2012, the company even developed and launched a new eco-friendly material called PlanWood, a non-toxic composite wood material made from the two tons of sawdust produced at their toy factory daily.
This innovative manufacturing technique sees the leftover wood particles compressed at intensive pressures to form a stronger, more durable composite wood. Because of the amount of pressure applied during production, very little glue is needed to bind the sawdust together: believe it or not, less than 1% of formaldehyde-free E-zero glue is used in the manufacturing of PlanWood, with no further heavy chemicals used after.
Because of its unique composite nature, organic colourants can also be added in the process, making it more eco-friendly than non-tested dyes or even soy- or water-based inks! Parents will especially love this fact, because it means that PlanWood toys are now dishwasher-safe – a big plus point for those with children who can’t stop putting everything in their mouths!
